Significance of Preoperative Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage(PTBD) in Obstructive Jaundice

Abstract
A retrespective review of obstructive jaundice was one. During 5 years from Jan. 1987 to Aug. 1991, we have experienced 93 cases of obstructive jaundice, which were operated in the Chosun University Hospital, Medical college.
Authors divided into two groups, the first group(26 cases) is preoperative PTBD and the second group(67 cases)is non-preoperative PTBD. The results were obtained as follows,
1) The treatment of obstructive jaundice, preoperative PTBD showed more rapid resolution of hyperbilirubinemia & improved to hepatic, renal function, metabolic, nutritional status, and relief of pruritus.
2) Postoperative morbidity and mortality did'nt show signficant difference between two groups.
3) Postoperative morbidity and mortality seemed to be influenced by other risk factors, such as serum bilirubin, duration of drainage, causative disease(benign & malignant), operative methods & age.
